WordDefinition
Surface Water Water above Earth’s surface. Surface water is the opposite of ground water.
Tributary A smaller stream that feeds into a river which eventually goes into a river system. Ex. The Illinois river feeds into the Mississippi.
Groundwater The water found in the spaces between rock particles below Earth’s surface. Groundwater and surface water are opposites.
Watershed The area of land drained by a river system. Watersheds are separated by divides.
Water Table The upper boundary, or surface, of groundwater. The top layer of water.
Divide A ridge or area of higher ground Separates watersheds
Channel A path that a stream flows. Overtime, channels get bigger and deeper.
Aquifer A body of rock or sediment that stores groundwater and allows it to flow. The study of aquifers is called hydrogeology.
Gradient A measure of change in elevation over a certain distance. Gradient describes the steepness of land.
Porosity The percentage of rock that’s composed of pore space. The greater the space of the pore, the higher the porosity is.
Permeability The measure of how easy water can flow through an aquifer. Many pores in the aquifers are connected, so water can flow easily.
