| diction | choice and use of words in speech or writing |
| syntax | the study of rules whereby words or other elements of sentence structure are combined to form grammatical sentences |
| tone | manner of expression in speech or writing |
| voice | distinctive style or manner of expression of an author or of a character in a book |
| inversion | an interchange of position of adjacent objects in a sequence, especially a change in normal word order, such as the placement of a verb before its subject |
| anathema | vehement denunciation, a curse |
| figurative | not literal, using figures of speech, "figurative language" |
