TermDefinition
Atmosphere The blanket of gases that surrounds our planet.
Biosphere Includes all organisms on earth as well as the environments in which they live.
Geosphere The area from the surface of earth down to its center.
Hydrosphere All the water on earth, including the water in the atmosphere.
Dependent Variable A factor that is affected by changes in the independent variable.
Independent Variable An experiment is the factor that is changed by the experimenter.
Hypothesis A testable explanation of a situation that can be supported or disproved by careful procedures.
Scientific Law A principle that describes the behavior of a natural phenomenon.
Scientific Theory An explanation based on many observations during repeated investigations.
Cleavage A mineral that splits relatively easily and evenly along one or more flat planes.
Fracture Minerals that break with rough or jagged edges.
Hardness A measure of how easily a mineral can be scratched.
Luster The way that a mineral reflects light from its surface.
Streak The color of a mineral when it is broken up and powdered.
Fractional Crystallization Process similar to partial melting in that the composition of magma can change.
Partial Melting The process whereby some minerals melt at relatively low temperatures while other minerals remain solid.
Pegmatite Veins of extremely large-grained minerals.
You will be given a scenario of an experiment that you will read and identify the IV, DV, Constants, Hypothesis, Control.
Compare and contrast mass and weight. Mass Measured in Kilogram (kg) Your mass would not change if you went to the moon. Weight Measured in Newton (N) Your weight would be less on the moon. Both explain how things change on the moon.
Explain each part of the highlighted parts of a mineral. “Mineral- a naturally occurring, inorganic solid with a specific chemical composition and a definite crystalline structure”. Naturally Occurring- Not man made, Inorganic-Not a living organism, Solid- Has a definite shapes and volumes, Specific Chemical Composition- Composition unique to that mineral, mostly made of compounds, and Definite crystal structure- Geometric patterns.
Explain what physical properties could be used to tell the difference between Pyrite (Fool’s Gold) and Gold. You can use streak and hardness. The hardness is because the pyrite would scratch the gold. The streak because pyrite has a green streak and gold has a shiny yellow streak.
Given the harness of two different minerals and explain what would happen if they were rubbed together. A diamond is a 10 and Talc is a 1. The diamond would scratch the talc.
Explain how igneous rocks form. Form when lava or magma cools and minerals crystallize.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
