Quarter 1 Review

TermDefinition
Atmosphere the blanket of gases that surround our planet
Biosphere all organisms on Earth as well as the environments in which they live
Geosphere the area from the surface of Earth down to its center
Hydrosphere all the water on Earth, including the water in the atmosphere
Dependent Variable factor in an expirement that can change if the independent variable is changed
Independent Variable factor that is manipulated by the expirementer in an expirement
Hypothesis a testable explaination of a situation
Scientific Law is a principle that describes the behavior of a natural phenomenon
Scientific Theory is an explanation based on many observations during repeated investigations
Cleavage describes how a mineral breaks (smoothly)
Fracture describes how a mineral breaks (rough)
Hardness measure of how easily a mineral can be scratched
Luster the way a mineral reflects light (there are two types of luster, metallic and nonmetallic)
Streak the color of a mineral when it is broken up into a powder
Fractional Crystallization process in which different minerals crstallize from magma at different temperatures, removing elements from magma
Partial Melting the process whereby some minerals melt at relatively low temperatures while other minerals remain solid
Pegmatite vein deposites of extremely large-grained minerals that can contain rare ores such as lithium and beryllium
Mineral a naturally occurring, inorganic solid with a specific chemical composition and a definite crystalline structure
naturally occurring not man made
inorganic they are not made from living organisms
Solid it has a definite shapes and volumes
specific chemical composition each type of mineral has a chemical composition unique to that mineral (the majority are made from compounds)
definite crystalline structure a crystal is a solid in which the atoms are arranged in repeating patterns (there is six different crystal shapes)
Intrusive has coarse grains larger than 1 centimeter
Extrusive has fine grains and need magnification to be seen
Constants the variable that can't be changed
Controls standard for comparison in an expirement
2. Compare and contrast mass and weight. Mass doesn't change but weight can
4. Explain what physical properties could be used to tell the difference between Pyrite (Fool’s Gold) and Gold. Pyrite leaves a green streak on a porcyline plate, gold leaves gold.
5. Given the harness of two different minerals and explain what would happen if they were rubbed together. The material that is softer would break or be scratched by the harder material.
6. Explain how igneous rocks form. Igneous rocks form by magma or lava cooling.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
