Thermal Energy&Heat

TermDefinition
Temperature a measure of the average kinetic energy of each particle within an object
Fahrenheit scale The temperature scale on which water freezes at 32 degrees and boils at 212 degrees
Celsius scale the temperature scale on which water freezes at zero and boils at 100 degrees
Kelvin scale the temperature scale on which zero is the temperature at which no more energy can be removed from matter (absolute zero)
absolute zero The temperature at which no more energy can be removed from matter
heat Thermal energy that is transferred from one substance to another.
conduction The transfer of heat between particles within a substance
convection the transfer of heat by the movement of currents within a fluid or gas
radiation the transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves
conductor A material that easily transfers heat between its particles, conducts heat well
insulator A material that does not easily transfer heat between its particles
state the three forms in which matter exists - solid, liquid, gas
change of state The physical change of matter from one state to another.
melting The change from the solid to the liquid form of matter
melting point The temperature at which a substance melts
freezing The change from the liquid to the solid form of matter
freezing point The temperature at which a substance freezes.
vaporization The change from the liquid to the gaseous form of matter
evaporation Vaporization that occurs on the surface of a liquid
boiling point The temperature at which a liquid substance boils
condensation The change from the gaseous to the liquid form of matter
Energy The ability of a system to do work

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
