Paleontology

6th Grade Probe Science

QuestionAnswer
What is a fossil? The preserved remains or traces of living things.
What is paleontology? The study of prehistoric life through the use of fossils.
What is a paleontologist? A person who studies prehistoric life through fossils.
What can become a fossil? Any living thing.
What is petrification? The process which turns bones to rock.
Which parts of the organism usually fossilize? The hard parts such as the bones and teeth.
What type of rock are fossils usually found in? Sedimentary
What types of fossils are found in rocks? trace fossils, cast fossils, mold fossils, petrified fossils and carbon hair.
What is a trace fossil? A fossil that shows evidence of an organism's actions such as a footprint.
How can organisms be preserved with all their parts? Tar, ice, or amber
What can scientist learn from fossils? How life has changed on earth How Earth's surface has changed How Earth's environment and climate has changed
How can fossils show how life has changed? There are fossils of organisms that do not exist today; organisms are becoming more complex
How can fossils show us how the Earth's surface has changed? There are fossils that show us where volcanos have erupted, earthquakes have crumbled mountains, water has receded, and erosion has worn away layers.
How can fossil's show us how the Earth's environment has changed? There are fossils that show that some arctic climates used to be tropical, and some dry climates used to be wet, etc.
What is the Law of Superposition? States that the older layer of sediment is usually under the younger layer of sediment.
What is extrusion? When lava has broken through the Earth's surface and hardened over the top crust layer forming a new layer of igneous rock.
What is intrusion? When magma cuts through layers of the crust but does not break through the surface.
Which is older an intrusion or the layers surrounding it? The layers surrounding the intrusion are older.
Which is older an extrusion or the layers below it? The layers below the extrusion is older.
What is unconformity? Where new rock layers meet much older layers (there are missing layers).
What is a gap in the Geologic Record? An unconformity
What is the Law of Horizontality? As sediments settle out of water they are deposited in horizontal layers.
What is the Law of Uniformitarianism? Events that occur today also occurred in the past.
What is absolute dating? When scientist find the actual age of the rock by finding how many years since the rock was formed.
How do scientist find the absolute age of a rock? radiometric or radioactive dating
What is relative dating? When scientist find the age of the rock by comparing the age to other rocks.
How do scientist find the relative age of a rock? Using index fossils
How old is the earth? 4.6 billion years old
What is the Geologic time scale? Life and events in Earth's history.
What are index fossils? Fossils which were only alive during a short period of time.
Why does the Geographic time scale not use years or centuries? Because the amount of time between each event and the amount of time each event occurred is too large.
