island arc a string of islands formed by volcanoes over a deep-ocean trench
hot spot an area where magma from deep in the mantle melts through the crust above it
magma chamber a pocket below the crust where magma collects
pipe a long tube in the ground that connects the magma chamber to Earth's surface
vent the opening in the crust
crater bowl shaped area that may form at the top of a volcanic mountain around the central vent
viscosity resistance of a liquid to flow.
silica a compound of silicate and oxygen that determines the viscosity of lava
pyroclastic flow a mixture of hot gases, ash, cinders and bombs that erupt explosively
caldera the huge hole left by the collapse of a volcanic mountain
sill landform made when magma squeezes between horizontal layers of rock.
dike landform made when magma forces a path across rock layers
batholith large rock mass
geyser a fountain of water and steam that erupts from the ground
