QuestionAnswer
What is Chemistry? The study of matter.
What is matter? Matter is anything with a mass and occupies space.
What is energy? Energy is the capacity of a physical system to perform work.
List 3 types of energy. Heat, kinetic, light, potential, electrical, mechanical
List the phases of matter. Solids, liquids, gases
What has a definite shape and volume? Solids
What has a definite volume but changes shape? Liquids
What changes shape and volume? Gases
What is melting? The process by which a solid changes into a liquid
What is melting point? The temperature at which a solid changes into a liquid
What is freezing? The process by which a liquid changes into a solid
What is freezing point? The temperature at which a liquid changes into a solid
What is evaporation? The process by which a liquid changes into a gas
What is boiling point? The temperature at which a liquid changes into a gas
What is condensation? The process by which a gas changes into a liquid.
Define Diffusion. The movement of particles from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration until they are evenly distributed.
Define Osmosis. The movement of particles from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration across a semi permeable membrane.
What can be observed without changing the identity of the substance? Physical properties
What is physical changes? When matter's physical appearance is changed but composition/ chemical properties is unchanged
Characteristics that gives matter the ability/inability to undergo change that changes its composition is called? Chemical properties
What is chemical change? Change in which one or more kinds of matter are transformed to new kind of matter with altered compositions

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
