Alloys

TermDefinition
Alloys a mixture composed of two or more metal or a metal and a non-metal
Alloys of iron 0.5% carbon = mild steel, +nickel & chromium=stainless steel
Why different properties? when new atoms enter the metallic lattice of layers of metallic ions and the ‘sea’ of delocalised electrons, the layers no longer slide easily
Making steel molten iron from blast furnace to oxygen furnace, then Calcium oxide added to neutralise acidic impurities
Stainless steel 70% iron, 20% chromium, and 10% nickel (does not rust)
Brass 70%copper, 30% zinc (harder than copper, does not corrode)
Bronze 95% copper, 5% tin (harder than brass, does not corrode, sonorous)
