weathering, erosion and deposition
Term | Definition |
---|---|
physical weathering | the breaking down of a rock into smaller parts without changing the chemical composition |
chemical weathering | breaking down of rocks by changing the chemical composition |
abrasion | the act of scraping, rubbing, or grinding to wear away a surface |
breaking wave | the result of waves dragging on the bottom causing water to curl |
delta | the deposition of sediments at the mouth of a river or stream |
erosion | the carrying away of sediment by wind, water, ice and other agents |
finger lake | a body of water that forms in a long narrow u shaped valley |
flood plain | nearly level plain that borders a stream or river |
glacial groove | a long narrow channel or furrow on bedrock formed by the gouging and sanding actions of rocks and sediments in the glacier |
glacier | a large mass of natural formed ice on land that moves downhill due to gravity |
mass movement | any variety of erosion and deposition done directly by gravity |
meander | a curve or bend in a stream or river |
sandbar | a pile or low ridge of sand often just off shore |
sandblasting | erosion by wind carrying sand and hitting things |
sediment | particles or materials that were formed by weathering and erosion of rocks |
stream | water flowing through a channel on land |
stream channel shape | the shape of the body of rock or loose materials that confine the stream |
u shaped valley | the type of valley created by a glacier |
v shaped valley | the type of valley created by a river |
watershed | the area of land drained by one stream |
weathering | the chemical and physical alterations of rock and other earth materials |
barrier island | long narrow island parallel to the shore built of sand deposited by ocean waves |
deposition | the process by which sediments are released or droppped |
drumlin | a low, long, narrow streamlined oval mound of unsorted sediment that is formed at the bottom of the glacier |
kettle lake | a lake formed when an ice chunk breaks off the glacier and melts in place |
moraine | a mound, ridge of unsorted, unlayered sediment deposited directly from an edge or bottom of a glacier |
outwash plain | the sorted and layered sediments deposited out in front of a glacier |
sand dune | a pile, hill or mound of sand deposited by wind on a land surface |
