Training

DEPARTMENT OF CORRECT TRAINING

All new corrections officers receive 160 hours of training during their first year of employment
At least 40 of these hours are completed prior to being independently assigned to any post
Corrections officers receive at least 40 hours of training each subsequent year of employment
At a minimum this training covers the following areas
Security and safety procedures Supervision of offenders
Suicide intervention and prevention Response to Resistance
Report writing Inmate rules and regulations
Rights and responsibilities of inmates Key Control
Interpersonal relationships Fire and emergency procedures
Evacuation plan Escape plan
All new professional, health services, and support employees, including contractors and city employees (e.g., Food Service, Building Engineers) who have regular or daily inmate contact will receive Orientation training
and an additional 40 hours of training to be completed prior to being independently assigned to a particular job
Facility management and supervisory staff receive at least 40 hours of management and supervision training during their first year
and at least 24 hours of management training each year thereafter
