Density | The amount of mass of a substance to a given volume. |
Radiation | The direct transfer of energy from electromagnetic waves. |
Electromagnetic Waves | A form of energy that can travel through space. |
Infrared Radiation | A form of energy with wavelengths that are shorter than ultraviolet radiation. |
Green House Effect | The process by which gases can hold heat in the air. |
Thermal Energy | The total energy of motion in the molecules of a substance. |
Temperature | The average amount of energy of a motion of each molecule of a substance. |
Scattering | Reflection of light in all directions. |
Heat | The energy transferred from a hotter object to a cooler one. |
Conduction | The direct transfer of heat from one substance to another substance that is touching. |
Convection | The transfer of heat by the movement of fluid. |
Wind | A horizontal movement of air from a high pressured area. |
Anemometer | Something that test the wind speeds. |
Wind-Chill Factor | The increased cooling that a wind can cause. |
Land Breeze | The flow of air from land to a body of water. |
Sea Breeze | A breeze from a large body of water to land. |
Monsoons | Sea and land breezes over a large region that changes direction with the seasons. |
Global Winds | Winds that blow steadily from a specific directions over long distances. |
Coriolis Effect | The way the earth's rotations make the winds curved. |
Latitude | The distance from the equator measure in degrees. |
Jet Streams | Earth's surface are bands of high speed winds. |
Evaporation | Is the process by which water molecules in liquid water escape into the air. |
Relative Humidity | A measure of the amount of water vapor in the air compared to the maximum amount of air could hold. |
Humidity | The amount of water vapor in the air. |
Psychrometer | An instrument used to measure relative humidity. |
Condensation | The process by which molecules of water vapor in the air can become liquid. |
Dew Point | The temperature at which the condensation begins. |
Cumulus | The clouds that look puffy. |
Stratus | Clouds that form a flat layer. |
Cirrus | Wispy feathery clouds. |
Precipitation | Any form of water that falls from the clouds and reaches earth's surface. |
Rain Gauge | An open ended tube that collects water. |
Droughts | Unusually low precipitation. |
