Math vocabulary

TermDefinition
net value The value you get after adding or subtracting
Additive Inverse opposite of a number
rational numbers rational numbers are all integers, fractions, repeating decimals and terminating decimals
integers a positive number, a negative number or zero but not a fraction or a decimal fraction.
simplify put in smallest form
evaluate solve and use substitution if necessary
mean the mean is the total of all the scores or amounts,divided by, how many scores or amounts there were
average Often the word average refers to the mean
order of operations The order in which to perform operations when evaluative expressions with more than one operation
associative property Change the groupings of addends or factors does not change the sum or product
commutative property Changing the order of addends or factors does not change the sum or product
fraction any part of a group, number or whole.
decimals a number written using the base 10 value system; a number separates the whole from the part (fraction)
equation a mathematical statement containing an equals sign
absolute value the distance the number is from zero on the number line, never negative
opposite two numbers having the same numeral but different signs.
product answer to a multiplication problem
sum answer to an addition problem
