The Vocabulary of Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Synonym a word that has the same or almost the same meaning as another word
Antonym a word that is opposite to another word
Homophone a word having the same pronunciation as another word but with a different meaning or spelling
Homonym a word having the same spelling as another word but a different meaning
Prefix a syllable or syllables place at the beginning of a word
Suffix a syllable or syllables place at the end of a word
Root Word the main part of the word to which prefixes and suffixes may be added
Denotation is a word's actual dictionary definition
Connotation is the tone of the word. It is the emotion or associations a word normally arouses in people using, hearing, or reading the word.
Literal Usage when a word is used by its strict dictionary definition
Figurative Usage when a word is used in a symbolic slang, or non-literal way
Analogy is a comparison in which one finds the relationship between two words
Context Clues are built into a sentence to guide the reader to the correct answer on vocabulary exercise, classroom test, and even SAT test
Restatement consists of a synonym for a missing word
Contrast consist of a synonym for missing word
Inferance simply but do not directly state the meaning of a missing word
Passive Vocabulary you understand the words meaning but you do not actively use the word
Active Vocabulary the words you use on a common basis
