Metaphor | A figure of speech that makes a comparison between two unlike things without using like, as, than, or resembles. |
Simile | A figure of speech that makes a comparison between two unlike things using a word such as like, as, than, or resembles. |
Personification | A figure of speech in which an object or animal is given human feelings, thoughts, or attitudes(Something comes to life). |
Symbol | A person, place, thing, or event that has meaning in itself and also stands for something more than itself. (both literal and figurative in manner) |
Inversion | The reversal of the normal word order in a sentence or phrase. (Bradstreet, etc) Put upside down or in the opposite position, order, or arrangement. TALK LIKE YODA |
Tone | The attitude a writer takes toward the subject of a work, the characters in it, or the audience. (Knight, Edwards, Byrd, Bradford, etc.) (How it sounds from the tone of your voice.) |
