allegory a story in which characters, events, and objects become symbols in a universal, mythic or religious narrative
anachronism someone existing or something is happening outside its proper or chronological order. ex the clocks and chimneys in Shakespeare's play Julius Ceasar
anaphora the repetition of a word or phrase at the beginning of several successive verses, clauses or paragraphs
antithesis involves a direct contrast of structurally parallel word groupings, generally for the purpose of contrast. ex sink or swim
apostrophe a way of addressing someone or something invisible or not ordinarily spoken to- "Oh wind, why doubt thou blow so cold?"
cacophony the use of harsh, discordant sounds sounds, dissonance (to contribute to emotion, to emphasize tone, to create mood)
catharsis the purging of emotions in an audience
connotation the emotional associations of a word
diction word choice, often words that have more than one meaning intending to generate associations (grave-serious/grave-burial plot)
foil a secondary character whose traits contrast with and illuminate qualities of a primary character
