6th grade Cell Vocab
Science Vocabulary review of Cell unit
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Bacteria | Smallist organisms on Earth, each of which is made up of only one cell. |
| Cell Membrane | Flexible structure that holds a cell together, forms a boundry between the cell and its enviroment, and helps control what enters and leaves the cell. |
| Cell Wall | Structure of plants, algae, fungi and many types of bacteria that supports and protects the cell membrane. |
| Cytoplasm | Gelatin like substance inside the cell membrane that contains water, chemicals and cell parts. |
| Organelle | Specialized cell parts that perform a cell's activities. |
| Nucleus | Cell organelle that contains the hereditary material. |
| Vacuole | Baloonlike cell organelle in the cytoplasm that can store food, water and other substances. |
| Mitochondria | Cell organelles where cellular respiration takes place. |
| Photosynthesis | Process by which plants, algae, and many types of bacteria make their own food. |
| Chloroplast | Green organelle in a plant's leaf cells where most photosynthesis takes place. |
| Ribosome | Small stucture on which cells make their own proteins. |
| Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum | Cytoplasmic organelle that moves materials around in a cell and is made up of a complex series of folded membranes--"WITHOUT RIBOSOMES" |
| Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum | Cytoplasmic organelle that moves materials around in a cell and is made up of a complex series of folded membranes --"WITH RIBOSOMES" |
| Golgi Body | Organelles that package cellular materials and transport them within the cell or out of the cell. |
| Tissue | Group of similar cells that work together to do one job. |
| Organ | Structure, such as the heart, made up of different types of tissues that all work together. |
| Cell Theory | States that all organisms are made up of one or more cells, the cell is the basic unit of life, and all cells come from other cells. |
| Lysosomes | A membrane-bound organelle in the cytoplasm of most cells that breaks down food, cell waste and word out cell parts. |
| DNA | Deoxyriboucleic acid, which is the genetic material of all organisms, made up of two twisted strands of sugar-phosphate molecules and nitrogen bases. |
