What is Charlemagne's greatest achievement? He built an empire that was larger than any other since Roman times.
What did the King get back in return for giving up land to the lords? Military protection
How are the manor and feudalism linked together? Feudalism was the social order and the manor supported it.
What role did the church play in medieval times? It was the stable force that held everything together during the middle ages.
What were some of the causes of the crusades? Desire to get rich and have land, opportunity for adventure, get back the holy land
What were some of the effects of the crusades? Their is still hostility between Christians and Muslims, new trade opportunities opened up, pope's power went down and the King's went up
What key issue did Popes and Kings usually fight over? The fought over who had the power to appoint church officials
What did it mean for a Pope to "interdict" a king? It meant that the King and his kingdom were denied service to the church
Why did Henry IV have to beg for forgiveness to Pope Gregory VII? Because Henry feared for his life after getting his whole kingdom kicked out of the church.
Why was it significant that Charlemagne was crowned emperor by the Pope? It joined the Germanic power with that of the Catholic Church and the Roman empire.
What did Monks and Nuns do in their spare time when they weren't serving as missionaries? Copying books, teaching at schools, and tended to the sick and poor
What were the results of the Commercial Revolution? People got paid to work for the first time, there was more money available for businesses, and the king's power went up
What were the factors behind the growth of cities and towns in Europe? The growth of trade fairs, better farming techniques, serfs and peasants were looking for a better way of life
