Measurement

TermDefinition
Measurement What you call a repeatable observation of a quantity that includes a number and a unit.
Estimate A reasonable guess at a quantity based on an observation.
Precision How detailed or exact a measurement is. This is an important part of measuring.
Accuracy The correctness of a measurement. An important part of measuring.
SI System A way of measurement used by scientists around the world. SI stands for Systeme International which is french for International System.
Length The distance from end to end. Measured in kilometers, meters, centimeters, and millimeters. Use a metric ruler/meter stick/metric measuring tape.
Temperature The degree of heat or cold measured in degrees celsius. Use a thermometer.
Mass (1) A quantity or amount of something with no particular shape or number. (2) The quantity of matter that a body contains as measured by the force of gravity on it. Use a triple beam balance.
Volume The quantity that describes an amount of space an object takes up. Use a graduated cylinder.
Displacement To take the place of something.
Meniscus The curved surface of a liquid in a tube.
Density Mass per unit of volume. Use a triple beam balance and graduated cylinder. Mass/volume.
Bar graph Uses vertical lines (thick lines) to show the relationship among the data.
Line graph Uses lines (connected to dots) to show a relationship between the two things---data changes over time.
Pie graph Uses a circle divided into sections to display data and all parts (together in total) must equal 100%
