Vocabulary Terms and Definitions for Computer Technology Standard 4

TermDefinition
Computer system The computer along with any software and peripheral devices that are necessary to make the computer function.
Database A collection of organized data that allows access, retrieval, and use of data.
Delete To erase a document from a computer.
Desktop publishing The use of a software application to combine page layout, text, and artwork to produce documents properly formatted for print, Web, or mobile devices.
Document A computer file containing information input by a computer user and usually created with an application.
File Management A program on a computer that provides tools and allows the user to search for, manage, create, edit, view, print, rename, copy, or delete files or folders.
Folder An organizational element of a computer operating system used to group files.
Hardware The physical components (machine, wires, etc.) that make up the system unit plus the peripheral devices connected to it.
Input device Enters data and commands into the computer (e.g., keyboard, mouse, touch screen, microphone, webcam, etc.).
Operating system System software that acts as a "go between", allowing computer hardware and other software to communicate with each other (e.g., Windows 8, Mac OS 10.7, Linux, Unix, etc.).
Output device Allows the user to view or listen to the data a computer processes (e.g., monitor, printer, headphones, speakers, etc.).
Peripherals Additional hardware that isn't necessary for a computer to function, but does enhance how the computer can be used (e.g., scanner, webcam, microphone, pen tablet).
Presentation An application that allows the user to create and save slides to use as a slide show.
Rename To change the title of a document.
Save As A feature that allows you to change the attributes of a file (such as location, file name, or file type) before saving it.
Save to store data to access at a later time.
Spreadsheet A grid of rows and columns containing numbers, text, and formulas used to perform calculations.
Storage device External hardware used to store and retrieve data, such as a disk drive, CD/DVD drive, or flash drive.
Word processing The use of software application to create, edit, format, print and save text
