TermDefinition
Measurement A repeatable observation of a quantity that includes a number and a unit
Estimate A reasonable guess at a quantity based on an observation.
Accuracy Refers to the correctness of a measurement
Percision Refers to how detailed or exact measurements is
SI system System International. French for International System.
SI has each type of measurement. SI has a base unit and Prefixes and show multiple of that unit. All multiples and fractions are in powers of TEN.
Prefixes Are added to the base units to create Larger or Smaller units for the quantity measured.
SI Symbols Meter Gram Second Celcius Length or distance Mass Time Temperature
SI base unit for length and distance Meter
Unit of lengths (km) - kilometer (m) - meter (cm) - centimeter (mm) - milimeter
Meter Stick Stick that is 1 meter long and it is used to measure greater distances along a straight line
Volume Capacity Quantity that describe an amount of space. The empty space in a container.
When you measure volume 2 things to know are How much Space How much Empty
Graduated Cylinder Name give to a narrow container that is used to measure the volume of liquids.
The cylinder is graduated or marked the units of volume are measured in milli-liters (ml)
Mass The measure of the amount of matter in a solid, liquid, or gas.
Matter All solids, liquids, and gases have mass because they are made up of matter (rather than energy).
Balance How the mass of an object is measured.
Gram (g) Is the unit of mass that is used with SI prefixes to create other units.
Balance One measuring device for mass. There is a pan or platform on one side of the device on which to place the matter.
Temperature The measurement of hot and cold.
Length The distance between two points.
Volume The amount of space a object takes up.
Meniscus The curved surface of water in a graduated cylinder.
Displacemet How much a object makes the water in a graduated cylinder.
Density The compactness of an object.
