Term | Definition |
---|---|
Bias | Prejudice in favor of or against one thing, person, or group compared with another, usually in a way considered to be unfair. |
Random Sample | A subset of the population selected without bias in order to make inferences about the entire population. |
Simulation | An experiment or model used to test the outcomes of an event. |
Examples of simulations with technology | random number generator calculator computer model |
Examples of simulations without technology | spin a spinner roll a cube toss a coin |
Mean | Average: Add all values and divide by the number of values. |
Median | Middle: Put numbers in order from least to greatest. Mark off high and low values until you reach the middle. If there are 2 middles, add them and divide by 2. |
Mode | Most: Put numbers in order from least to greatest. Find the number that appears the most. There may be more than one mode, or there may be no mode. |
Range | Difference: Put numbers in order from least to greatest. Subtract the lowest number from the highest number. |
Mean Absolute Deviation | The average of the distances of each value from the mean of the data set. |
Calculating Mean Absolute Deviation | Find the mean of all values. Find the distance of each value from that mean. Find the mean of those differences. |
