| Term | Definition |

| observation | the act of using one or more of your senses to gather information and taking notes of what occurs. |
| inference | a logical explanation of an observation that is drawn from prior knowledge and or experience (the result of observation) |
| qualitative description | a description of an observation using your senses. (sight, smell, hearing, touch, or taste) |
| hypothesis | a possible explanation of an observation that can be tested by scientific investigations |
| scientific law | a rule that describes a pattern in nature (ex. The Law of Gravity) |
| prediction | a statement of what will happen next in a sequence of events |
| description | a spoken or written summary of observations |
| science | the investigation and exploration of natural events and of new information that results from those investigations |
| quantitative description | a description of an observation using numbers and measurements |
| scientific method (inquiry) | a process of skills that uses a set of skills to answer questions or test ideas about the natural world |
| investigation | to examine in detail, study, or inquire into systematically (experiment) |
| critical thinking | comparing what you already know with information you are given in order to decide whether or not you agree with it |
| explanation | an interpretation of observations |
