Term Defintion
Diction the choice and use of words and phrases in speech or writing
Imagery visually descriptive or figurative language, especially in a literary work
Characterization the process by which the writer reveals the personality of a character
Analysis detailed examination of the elements or structure of something, typically as a basis for discussion or interpretation
Syntax the arrangement of words and phrases to create well-formed sentences in a language
Genre a category of artistic composition, as in music or literature, characterized by similarities in form, style, or subject matter
Plot the main events of a play, novel, movie, or similar work, devised and presented by the writer as an interrelated sequence
Tone the general character or attitude of a place, piece of writing, situation, etc
Literary Period of, relating to, concerned with, or characteristic of literature or scholarly writing
Explicit stated clearly and in detail, leaving no room for confusion or doubt
Mood The atmosphere that pervades a literary work with the intention of evoking a certain emotion or feeling from the audience
Style describes the ways that the author uses words
Inferred to derive by reasoning; conclude or judge from premises or evidence
Figurative Language language that contains or uses figures of speech
Voice the individual writing style of an author
Evidence a type of literary device that appears in different categories of essays and theses in the form of paraphrase and quotations
