Spelling Rules from Spellodrom/Esstential Spelling
'i' before 'e' except after: | 'c' with the sound of 'eeeee' eg. belief, receive. |
When adding 'y' to a word ending in 'e' you: | drop the 'e' before adding the 'y' eg. noise + y = noisy. |
When a word ends in an 'e', the 'e' is usually kept when: | A suffix beginning with a consonant is added eg. noise + less = noiseless. |
When a word ends in an 'e', the 'e' is usually dropped when: | A suffix beginning with a vowel is added eg. love + able = lovable. |
The prefixes 'dis-' and 'mis-' never: | Drop their 's' even when added to a word beginning with 's' eg. 'dis' + 'ability' = disability, 'dis' + satisfied = dissatisfied. |
