Spelling rules from spelladrome/essential spelling
'i' before 'e' except after | 'c' with the sound of 'eeeee' eg. belief, receive |
When adding the 'y' to a word ending in 'e' you: | Drop the 'e' before adding the 'y' eg. noise + y = noisy |
When a word ends in an 'e', the 'e' is usually kept when: | A suffix begging with a consonant is added eg. noise + less = noiseless |
When a word ends in an 'e', the 'e' is usually dropped when: | A suffix begging with a vowel is added eg. love + able = loveable |
The prefixes 'dis-' and 'mis-' never | Drop their 's', even when added to a word begging with 's' eg. 'dis' + 'ability' = disability, 'dis' + 'satisfied' + dissatisfied |
if the second syllable is stressed | you need double the consonant |
