SAT basic math vocab
Basic math terms students need to know for the SAT math sections
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Mean | Arithmetic average; add all the numbers in a list and divide the sum by the number of items in the list |
Median | The middle number in a sorted/ordered list |
Mode | The number in a list that occurs most often |
Integer | A number with no fractional/decimal part (... -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, ...) |
Real number | Any number (-3, -2.3, 0, pi, sq rt 2) |
Constant term | A number that has a fixed value; Sometimes represented by a letter such as "c" |
Even number | A number that is exactly divisible by 2 (... -4, -2, 0, 2, 4, 6, ...) |
Odd number | A number that is NOT exactly divisible by 2 (... -3, -1, 1, 3, 5, ...) |
Positive number | A number greater than zero |
Negative number | A number less than zero |
Consecutive numbers | Numbers which follow each other in order without gaps; "in a row" (7, 8, 9, 10) |
Prime number | A number that is only divisible by 1 and itself; cannot be divided (1 is NOT considered to be this type of number) |
Prime factors | The factors of a number that are prime (2 and 3 are these types of factors for 48) |
Multiples | The result of multiplying a number by integers |
xy coordinate plane or Cartesian plane | The plane or grid containing the x and y axis; what you usually graph lines on |
Ordered pair | A set of coordinates (x, y) |
Sum | The result of an addition problem |
Difference | The result of a subtraction problem |
Product | The result of a multiplication problem |
Quotient | The result of a division problem |
Reciprocal or Multiplicative Inverse | 1 divided by the given number; the "flipped" version of the number |
Remainder | The amount left over after division |
Ratio | A comparison of two numbers; notations include the use of fractions or colons |
Whole number | A positive number that does not have a fractional/decimal part (0, 1, 2, 3, ...) |
Exponent | Represents repeated multiplication; The small superscript number on the base |
