Rocks & Rock Cycle
Unit 2
Term | Definition |
---|---|
EXTRUSIVE IGNEOUS | Rock formed by the cooling & solidifying of molten rock on on the Earth's surface. |
INTRUSIVE IGNEOUS | Rock formed by the cooling & solidifying of molten rock inside the Earth. |
METAMORPHIC | Rock formed by processes of heat and/or pressure under the Earth's surface. |
SEDIMENTARY | Rock formed from the processes of compacting and cementing (lithification) of weathered rock (sediment) that is layered. |
STRATIFICATION | The layering of rocks, sediment, or lava. |
DEFORMATION | The bending or changing of rocks due to stress. |
MAGMA | Molten (melted) rock below Earth's surface that can cool to form igneous rock. |
SEDIMENT | Weathered (broken) rock fragments that can form sedimentary rock under the right conditions. |
METAMORPHISM | The change in a rock's structure through heat and pressure. |
ROCK | A naturally occurring, solid mixture of one or more minerals and possibly organic material. |
ROCK CYCLE | The processes and changes that occur to rocks and materials over time; a diagram that illustrates those changes and processes |
MINERAL | A naturally occurring, inorganic solid with a definite crystal structure; one or more usually makes up the composition of a rock. |
EROSION/DEPOSITION | Two processes, along with weathering, that help produce sediment and lead to sedimentary rock formation. |
