What is the Geocentric Model? The sun & planets orbit the Earth
What is the Heliocentric Model? The planets all orbit the Sun
Who is Copernicus? The astronomer that came up with the Heliocentric Model
Who is Kepler? The astronomer that discovered that the orbits of the planets were elliptical
Name 2 reasons Pluto is not considered a planet. There are many other orbiting objects Pluto's size discovered. Pluto's orbit crosses Neptune's orbit.
Where are the inner and outer planets located in our solar system? The inner planets are in between the sun and the asteroid belt. The outer planets are located between the asteroid belt and the Kuiper Belt.
What do all the inner planets have in common? They are all terrestrial (rock) based.
What do all the outer planets have in common? They are all made out of gases and are larger than the inner planets.
How is an astronomical unit distance measured? The distance between the Sun & the Earth.
When is a light year used & when is an astronomical unit used? A light year is used when measuring distances outside of our solar system. An astronomical unit is used when measuring distances in our solar system.
What is the Kuiper Belt? A belt of icy, rock particles on the outer orbit of our solar system.
What is the Oort Cloud? A cloud of icy, rock particles outside our solar system that surrounds it.
Where do comets, asteroids & meteors come from? Comets come from the Kuiper Belt & Oort Cloud. Asteroids & meteors come from the asteroid belt.
What is a galaxy? A collection of solar systems, stars, gas & dust located in the Universe.
What is the name of our galaxy? The Milky Way
What is the name of a group of galaxies located near each other which includes the Milky Way galaxy? Local Group
What is the type of galaxy that contains the oldest stars & are elliptical shaped. Elliptical galaxy
What is the type of galaxy that has a bulge of stars in the center and stars in spiral arms. Spiral galaxy
What is the type of galaxy that has no particular shape? Irregular galaxy
Where are the open cluster and globular cluster of stars located in our galaxy? Globular clusters are located in the center bulge & the open clusters are located in spiral arms of the galaxy.
What type of radiation existed at the time of the Big Bang? Gamma radiation
What evidence is there that the universe is expanding? The far away galaxies are moving farther away from us.
