Rocks

TermDefinition
Igneous Rock Type of rock formed when molten rock within Earth cools and hardens Examples: Granite, rhyolite, basalt, obsidian, pumice and andesite
Metamorphic Rock Type of rock formed when heat and pressure alter existing rock Is any rock that has gone under immense heat and pressure to transform into another rock. Examples: Schist, gneiss, slate, marble, anthracite and phyllite
Rock Cycle Process in which one type of rock is changed to a new type of rock through factors such as heat and pressure
Sedimentary Rock Type of rock formed when fragments of worn-away rocks or seashells are deposited and buried Type of rock that is made of sediment that has been deposited, compacted, and cemented Examples: Limestone, sandstone, shale, conglomerate and breccia
Rocks Mixture of two or more minerals
Magma Molten rock that is found deep beneath Earth's surface
Weathering Process of wearing away exposed rock or Breakdown of materials in the Earth's crust into sediment by rain, wind, or ice
Erosion Process of transporting sediment by rain, wind, or ice
Compacting Exert force on (something) to make it denser; compress
Cementation The binding together of particles or other things by cement Chemical process through which water carries and deposits dissolved minerals in the small spaces between the sediment particles.
Uplifting Brings buried rocks to the surface
Sediment Broken-down rocks, minerals, sand, and mud
Extrusive Igneous Rock which forms from lava that hardens on Earth's surface
Intrusive Igneous Rock which forms from magma that hardens beneath Earth's surface
Foliated Metamorphic Rock which is when the rock grains are arranged in parallel layers or bands.
Nonfoliated Metamorphic Rock which is when the rock grains are arranged randomly
Lava Magma that reaches Earth's surface
