Syringes and Needles

A barrel (sleeve) with a plunger that fits inside and needle attached to the other end is called a syringe
Syringes are made of Glass or plastic
The barrel (sleeve) of a syringe varies in volume from 1 to 60 mL
The most common syringe used is a 3mL
Insulin syringes are calibrated in {U}Units
Pulling back on the plunger creates a; Vacuum
Before using a syringe pull back on the plunger halfway up the barrel and then push the plunger forward. This is called; Breathing the syringe
The part of a needle that attaches to a syringe is called the; Hub
A needle attached to a syringe by sliding the hub onto the syringe and screwing the hub into a threaded insert called; Luer-Lok
Where the needle connects to the hub is called the Hilt
The entire length of the needle is called the; Shaft
The angled sharp end of the needle is called the Bevel
The diameter of the opening of a bevel is called the; Lumen
The gauge of a needle is the; Bore size of the lumen
As the # of the gauge goes up, the bore size of the lumen becomes Smaller
Safety needles are designed to reduce the risk of accidental punctures
Liquid medication should be drawn in the barrel and measured at the; Top of the black rubber stopper on the plunger
