Earths Crust

Chapter 7-9

QuestionAnswer
biological weathering When living things cause chemical or mechanical weathering
magma Hot moulded rock under the earths surface
igneous rock rock that forms from the hardening of magma
Intrusive rock magma cools underground
Extrusive rock lava cools on the earths surface
lava magma which is forced out of the earths surface
sediment rock particles
sedimentary rock rock that is made up from sediment
chemical weathering weathering which is caused by a chemical reaction
mechanical weathering weathering which is caused by a physical force
metamorphic rock rock which is formed under the earths surface, and is made from years for compacted rock
fossils impressions of remains of an organism that were covered by sediment when they died
fossil record informations we have from fossils
geological time scale A time scale that shows the changes of life on earth
Ice wedging cracks in rocks that are formed water getting into a rock and then freezing. Then in puts pressure on rock causing rock crack to widen
Erosion The movement of weathered rock materials
Deposition Laying down of sediment
Valley a low region of land between hills and mountains
Plains A level area of land
Delta When sediment builds up and causes the river to increase in size and fan out
Fiords A long narrow inlet of sea
Rock cycle A cycle which rocks got through and many stages of different rock
4 layers of the Earth Crust, mantle outer core, inner core
Crust the outer layer of the Earth
Continental crust Parts of the earth with continents on them
Oceanic Crust parts of the earth with only ocean floor on them
Pangaea when all the land was one big continent- a super continent
Divergent boundaries when two plates move away from each other
Convergent boundaries when two plates collide
Subduction zone An area in earths crust when a plate is sinking below another
Mountains A land mass that rises from the surrounding level of earth
Plateaus A large area of raised ground
Transform fault boundaries Areas where plates get stuck while going past one another and create friction, and then one of them slips
Earthquakes A vibration of earths crust where there is a sudden real ease of energy from plate movement
After Shocks small tremor that occurs after an earthquake
seismic waves + 2 types An Energy wave caused by an earthquake 1.)Primary-can be detected anywhere 2.)Secondary- Cannot travel in liquid
