atmosphere | earths air, which is made up of a thin layer of gases, solids, and liquids;forms a protective layer around the planet and is divided into three divisions. |
troposphere | layer of earths atmosphere that is closest to the ground, contains 99% of water vapor and 75% of the atmospheric gases, and is where clouds and weather happen. |
stratosphere | the layer of earths atmosphere that is right above the troposphere that extends 32 miles above earths surface. |
mesosphere | the region of earths atmosphere right above the stratosphere and below the thermosphere between 30 and 50 miles in altitude. |
ionosphere | a layer of electrically charged particles in the thermosphere that absorbs A.M. radio waves during the day and reflects them back at night. |
thermosphere | a region of the atmosphere that is above the mesosphere and is below the height at which the atmosphere ceases to have the properties of a continuous medium. |
exosphere | the outermost layer of a planet's atmosphere. |
ultraviolet radiation | a type of energy that comes to earth from the sun, can damage skin and cause cancer. (mostly absorbed by the ozone layer.) |
ozone layer | layer of the stratosphere with a high concentration of ozone; absorbs most of the sun's ultraviolet radiation |
chlorofluorocarbons(CFC's) | a group of chemical compounds used in refrigerators, air conditioners, aerosol sprays that may enter the atmosphere and destroy our ozone layer completely. |
