| Actual Loss | any loss of a person or object that can no longer be felt, heard, known, or experienced by the individual – body part, death, loss of job |
| Perceived | less tangible and easily misunderstood. Any loss that is uniquely defined by the grieving client – rejection by friend, loss of confidence |
| Maturational | resulting from normal life transitions i.e.. Child going to school |
| Situational | loss occurring in response to a specific external event such as a death or your house burning – auto accident, injury w/physical change |
| Bereavement | state of thought, feeling & activity that follows loss - includes grief & mourning - event of losing an important person to death |
| Grief | form of sorrow that follows perception/anticipation of loss of one or more valued/significant objects - helplessness, depression, insomnia, loneliness, depression, hopelessness, sadness, guilt and anger |
| Anticipatory grief | feelings of grief that develop before, rather than after, loss; process of disengaging - can be: debilitating, lengthy illness, Fatal illness, ability to fulfill expected role |
| Mourning | process that follows loss & includes working through grief - culturally patterned expressions of bereavement and grief – intense, Internal, Painful, Lengthy |
| Disenfranchised Grief | grief a person experiences when they incur loss that cannot be openly acknowledged, publicly mourned, or socially supported – death of gay partner/dog |
| Dysfunctional Grief | grief work is unresolved – conflicts not resolved - person heavily dependent on the deceased - unresolved issues/conflicts |
| Palliative care | therapy designed to relieve or reduce intensity of uncomfortable symptoms but not to produce a cure |
