Blended Fabrics

QuestionAnswer
Name three properties of cotton. Any from: strong, hard wearing, absorbent, Comfortable to wear, cool in hot weather, easy to dye, cheap, easy to wash, creases easily, flammable, shrinks, slow to dry
Name three properties of polyester. Strong, hard wearing, cheap, crease resistant, dries quickly, not absorbent, not biodegradable, melts as burns.
Name three properties of polyester cotton. Strong, hard wearing, dries reasonably quickly, soft, comfortable, crease resistant, doesn't shrink, very highly flammable.
Why are different fibres combined into fabrics? To give better properties.
What is a disadvantage of combining fibres? Some of the more undesirable properties can be mixed in.
Name the two ways of combining fibres. Blending and mixing.
How are fibres blended? When two or more fibres are combined to produce a yarn by twisting together (spinning).
How are fibres mixed? By two or more different types of yarn being woven together.
How are polyester and cotton combined to make polyester cotton? By blending the fibres.
Name two fibres that are often mixed to make a fabric. Lycra and cotton are mixed to make a stretchier fabric - for making things like leggings out of.
