Discovering the Solar System and Earth

asteroid a lump of rock in space
asteroid belt a band of space between mars and Jupiter in which thousands of large asteroids are found
astronomy the scientific study of objects in space
atmosphere a mixture of gases found around a star or a planet
axis an imaginary line between a planet's north and south pole
eclipse(solar) when the moon moves between the sun and Earth and it covers the sun's light so that only the edge of the sun can be seen.
galaxy a collection of hundreds of billions of stars held together by gravity
gravity a force that acts throughout the universe.
meteorite a small rock that has fallen from space onto Earth
moon the moon is Earth's only natural satellite
planet a large, round object that orbits a star
probe an unmanned spacecraft which gathers scientific information
satellite an object that orbits around a larger object, such as moons or man-made machines
Mercury the planet closest to the sun making 4 complete orbits every year; thin atmosphere and no weather at all
Venus 2nd planet from the sun
rotation spinning on its axis
revolution an object that travels around another object
equinox sunlight directly over the equator at this time
vernal equinox occurs in March and beginning of spring
autumnal equinox occurs in Sept. and beginning of fall
orbit path an object takes around another object
hemisphere half of a sphere
seasons caused by the tilt of Earth on its axis
phases different shapes we see of the moon from Earth
