TermDefinition
Consent of the governed People are the source of any and all governmental power.
Charters of the VA Company of London document guaranteed the colonists the same rights given to all English citizens
Articles of Confederation created a weak central government with no power to tax or enforce laws
Rule of law A fundamental principle of American government that states the government and those who govern are bound by the law, as are those who are governed.
Democracy In this type of system of government, the people rule.
Limited Government Government is not all powerful and may do only those things the people have given it the power to do
Representative Government The people elect public officeholders to make laws and conduct government on the peoples' behalf.
Virginia Declaration of Rights document served as a model of the Bill of Rights
Virginia Statue for Religious Freedom document guaranteed freedom of religious beliefs and opinions
Preamble introduction of the U.S Constitution
Bill of Rights document protected the fundamental freedoms of religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition
