Voc.-Ecosystems

QuestionAnswer
ecosystem the interaction of all the living (biotic) and non-living (abiotic) matter in a given area. (Ex. - It the tree are cut down, there will be too much sun and mushrooms will not be able to grow. The deer will move to another area.)
habitat the place in a ecosystem that provides the food and shelter that a specific organism needs to survive and reproduce. (Ex. Koalas need eukalyptus trees for shelter and food.)
biotic a living or once living thing in ecosystem (Ex:grass, animals, insects, worms, mushrooms, dead leaves, bones, feces, etc.)
abiotic a nonliving (never living) thing in an ecosystem (Ex: rocks, sun, water, temperature, minerals, wind etc.)
organism a living thing: an individual animals, plant, or single cell organism (Ex: cat, ameoba, fern)
interact to influence or have an affect on an organism or non-living thing (Ex: snake eating a frog, bird cleaning a crocodile's teeth, a tape worm in a person's small intestines)
population all the organisms of the same species living in the same area (place) at the same time. (Ex: a population of clown fish)
community all of the different populations living in an ecosystem at the same time. (Ex:coral, clown fish, seaweed, eels, etc.)
niche the role (job) of an organism in an ecosystem. (Ex. clown fish & sea anemone, a wolf chasing a sheep, or a butterfly pollinating a flower.)
species a group of organisms that are alike and are able to reproduce among themselves (cow + cow = cow; duck + duck = duck)
