Define Compound The substance formed by the chemical reaction of two or more different elements
Define Atomic Number The number of protons and electons in one atom of an element
Define Mass Number The total number of neutrons and protons in the nucleus of an atom of an element
How are ions formed? When atoms lose or gain electrons in a chemical reaction
Define monoatomic ions An ion consisting of a single atom
How do ions form ionic bonds? When a metal and a gas react together, the single outer electron in the metal atom is transferred to the gas atom
What number range are bases on the pH scale? 8-14
What number range are acids on the pH scale? 1-6
What is a balanced symbol equation for neutralisation? H+ + OH- reacts to form H20
What is the balanced symbol equation for the product of carbon dioxide? acid + carbonate reacts to form metal salt + water + carbon dioxide
What is the balanced symbol equation for the product of salt formation? acid + base reacts to form metal salt + water
Define Isotope Atoms with the same atomic number but different mass numbers
Define valence The outside shell of an atom
Define Protons Particles with a positive charge and about the same mass as a neutron
Define Neutrons Particles with no charge and about the same mass as a proton
Define Electrons Particles with a negative charge
What are the four groups of metal compounds that are bases? Metal hydroxides, metal oxides, metal hydrogen carbonates, metal carbonates
What is the chemical formulae for Nitric Acid? HNO3
What is the chemical formulae for Sulfuric Acid? H2SO4
How would you test to see if carbon dioxide was present? Limewater (if it turns cloudy, carbon dioxide is present)
Define Element A substance that cannot be broken down into any other substances
