ASSEMBLE SUPPLIES? WHAT DOES THAT MEAN FOR IN PATIENT ONLY? HAVE EXTRA SUPPLIES IN POCKET SO YOU DO NOT HAVE TO GO BACK TO THE CART.(GET SUPPLIES)
PREFERRED SITE FOR BLOOD DRAWS? Antecubital area of arm, Median cubital of arm Cephalic vein
ACCEPTABLE SITES Basilic Vein (only if preferred sites not available) Hand veins on the dorsal (top)
IF A PATIENT HAS A NON WORKING FISTULAS WHERE CAN YOU DRAW FROM? with a doctor's order you can use the hand for a draw of a non working fistula
You can draw blood where if a patient has an IV? And how long should the IV be paused? below the IV and 2 min.
unacceptable sites to draw blood are? above an active IV. Burned scarred or damaged skin. Arm with active Fistula or shunt or any other device in arm. Edematous arm or hand. an
If a patient has a partial or radical mastectomy site? You cannot draw from that side.
Can a phlebotomist draw from a leg vein? No never even with doctors orders
Can a phlebotomist draw from the foot? Yes with doctor's order.
Where is the Median Cubital vein? In the center of the arm where it bends
Where is the Cephalic vein? On the top of the arm same side as the thumb.
Where is the Basilic vein? On the same side as your pinky finger.
Where is the Median antibrachial vein? on the inside/middle part of your arm half way between your elbow and wrist
If you can do a foot draw without a tourniquet should you? Yes
Only use what kind of needle in a foot draw? Butterfly
After venipuncture in foot apply pressuree to site for one minute or until bleeding subsides. Apply gauze to foot without restricting what? Blood flow.
Where should you place the tourniquet on the arm and should you place the tourniquet on clothing to prevent what? 3 inches above the site and yes so you do not pinch the skin.
After placing tourniquet on patient ask the patient to what? close had into a fist, but no not pump
What happens when you leave a tourniquet on a patient for too long? it causes concentration of the blood in the vein and it may affect the test results.
What is it called when you feel for veins? Palpate
Cleanse and disinfect the selected site with the alcohol pad by? concentric circular motion starting at the center of the site outward.
Allow site to air dry and avoid palpating area where the needle is entering the vein. True
When preparing a draw where should the supplies be placed so you can reach them? Somewhere that the patient will not move off the bed and where you will not cross over your hands.

When drawing a PT7 AND/OR PTT. Is it necessary to draw a waste tube? Not if they are the only blood being drawn. And only if using a butterfly needle

If you are unable to obtain a specimen and its TIME draw what should you do? group page it out for assistance
When do you cancel a draw? Pt is not available or you are asked to postpone the draw..notify the nurse
STAT BLOOD DRAWS SHOULD BE IN THE LAB WITHIN ONE HOUR
If you are unable to get a STAT draw what should you do? you must group page it out. Let the medical staff know.
