Oil in Southwest Asia

crude oil petroleum as it comes out of the ground and before it has been refined or processed into useful products
nonrenewable resource it takes so long to form that it can't be replaced, ex. oil
oil reserves petroleum that has been discovered but remains unused in the ground
renewable resource it can't be used up or it can be replaced quickly as it is used up, ex. sunlight
geothermal energy heat from the center of Earth
impermeable rock keeps most oil and natural gas contained deep inside the Earth
tectonic plates giant sections of the Earth's crust
infant mortality rate the number of infants, out of every 1,000 babies born in a particular year, who die before reaching the age 1
HDI a country's per capita GDP along with other factors that reflect quality of life
GDP the total value of goods and services produced in a country in a year
per capita by or for each person, figure this by dividing the total amount of something by the number of people in a place
life expectancy the average age that a person in a given population can expect to live, it varies from country to country
distribution the way resources,power or goods are divided among people or groups
ethnic group people in a country who share a unique culture and identity
developed country a wealthy country with an advanced economy, these places have many industries and provide a comfortable way of life for most of their people
state a political unit that controls a particular territory, ex. Dubai in the UAE
region an area defined by one or more natural or cultural characteristics that set it apart from other areas
crust the hard, outer layer of Earth
natural gas found beneath Earth's surface and can be burned as fuel for cooking, heating homes and other purposes
desert a geographic region with too little rainfall to support much plant life; also a vegetation zone
nomad a person who wanders from place to place
