Election of 1876/Compromise of 1877 In exchange for the Republicans gaining the presidency, they promised to remove federal troops from the South. This enabled Confederate Democrats to regain power and African American rights were lost.
Jim Crow Era This time period began with the Compromise of 1877 when troops were removed from the South and African Americans were no longer protected.
Southern This area of the United States was left devastated and poor for many decades after the Civil War.
Northern/midwest This area of the United States saw a huge growth in industry and wealth after the Civil War.
Transcontinental Railroad After the Civil War, the completion of this speeded westward expansion.
Emancipation Proclamation This document of Lincoln's urged African Americans to enlists in the Union Army. Issued after Antietam.
Women Managed homes during Civil War while men were away; served as nurses
U.S. Grant (during Reconstruction) Union general who was elected President after the Civil War; pushed for rights of freedmen; urged radical Republicans not to punish the South.
Robert E. Lee (during Reconstruction) Southern general; urged South to rejoin the U.S.; Served as president of Washington College (Washington & Lee today)
Frederick Douglass (during Reconstruction) Former slave; pushed for passage of 13th-15th Amendments; Served as ambassador in Haiti
Reconstruction The period after the Civil War in the United States when the southern states were reorganized and reintegrated into the Union
