QuestionAnswer
bone-spongy - cancellous small spaces surrounded by matrix
bone- compact bone matrix with few small spaces
tuberosity a large tubercul or rounded elevation; especially on bone surface
crest prominent ridge
trochanter one of the boney prominences developed from independent osseous center-upper extremity of femur - NOTE: humans have two - horses have three
trochanter Horses canter, humans run on two feet-two on femur
bone - line low ridge
tubercle small rounded bump
epicondyle "upon a condyle" a slight elevation from the surface of a bone, giving attachment to a muscle or ligament
condyle a rounded articular surface at the extremity of a bone - like a condum with a rounded end
spine a short, sharp thornlike process of bone L. "a thorn"
head - bone enlarged end
ramus part of an irregularly shaped bone, smaller than a "process" that forms an angle with the main body
ramus "ram us" with a horn-bony projection (but not too large)
meatus a passage of a channel, especially the external opening of a canal L. a passage
meatus "meat us" at the Ear canal
sinus a cavity or hollow space in bone or other tissues L. sinus "cavity"
fossa a depression - more or less LONGITUDINAL in shape below the level of the surface of a part L. Trench or ditch
fossa "fossa" lost ya in the LONG ditch
foramen an aperature or perforation through a bone or a membranous structure L. an aperture
foramen L. an aperture - French "foro" to pierce
bones of skull - supra-orbital margin j
mastoid process Gr. resembling a breast
mastoid process the nipplelike projection of the petrous part of the temporal bone-hangs down behind ear
mastoid air cells the mastoid process is filled with cavities - connected to the middle ear
mastoid process holds what muscles? neck muscles involved in rotation of the neck
zygomatic process Gr. a bar or bolt Fr. zygon "yoke"
zygomatic process the rough projection from the maxilla that articulates with the zygomatic bone
zygomatic arch the arch formed by the temporal process of the sygomatic bone as it joins the zygomatic process of the temporal bones
styloid Peg-shaped Gr stylo- plus "eidos" resemblance
styloid process of the temporal bone the "stylus" projecting from the temporal bone
mandibular or glenoid fossa articulation point between the mandible & skull on TEMPORAL bone
where is the mandibular fossa a depression on the TEMPORAL bone
malleus, incus & stapes bones in ear
occipital bone the back of the head
occipital condyles articulation point between skull and first vertebra
Occipatal bone - the foramen magnum the large hole at the base of the skull - opening point where brain & spinal cord connect
occipatal bone - lambdoidal suture the suture which resembles the greek letter "lambda" - located on the superior of the occipatal bone -
sphenoid bone - "sphenoid" Gr. sphenoeides "wedge" plus eides "resemblance"
sphenoid bone - sella turcica L. sella "saddle"
sphenoid bone - lesser and greater wings projections
sphenoid sinuses the sphenoid has a bony sinus
ethmoid bone - bone inside skull, forms part of orbit of eyes, part of nasal cavity
ethmoid bone - cribiform plate cribri - "sieve" - form "forma" sievelike; containing many perforations
ethmoid bone - crista galli "crest" - triangular midline process of the ethmoid bone - extends from cribiform plate
ethmoid bone - perpendicular plate part of ethmoid bone that forms nose & connects to vomer-in nasal septum
nasal septum L septeum - a partition
fracture of cribiform plate in auto accident, cribiform plate may be fracture (if no air bags) driver's nose strikes the steering wheel
nasal conchae superior & middle - look like conches - increase surface area in nasal cavity - moistening & warming of air
zygomatic (malar) bones a quadrilateral bone that forms the prominence of the cheek-articulates with fraontal, sphenoid, temporaral and maxillary bone
nasal bones maxillae; maxillary sinuses; alveolar process; infraorbital foramen; palatine process
maxillary sinuses irregularly shaped bone-supporting superior teeth & form part of the orbit, hard palate, & nasal cavity
alveolar process alveolus "small cell, cavity or socket"
infraorbital foramen small hole below eyesocket
"infra" means a position below the part denoted by the word to which it is joined
vomer a flat bone-trapezoidal shape forming part of nasal septum
Palatine bones irregularly shpaed bone posterior to the maxillae
mandible (6 pieces) condylar process; coronoid process; alveolar process; body; angle; ramus
mandible - condylar process the "condum" on the end of the mandible where it articulates with the jaw
coronoid process a sharp triangular process from a bone
mandible - coronoid process the triangular, anterior process of the mandible -
mandible - alveolar process sockets for teeth
mandible - body main part of mandible
mandible - angle angle formed by lower posterior portion of mandible
mandible - ramus projection-angled on mandible near middle of posterior
lacrimal bones L. "lacrima" tears - relating to tears; tear ducts -
lacrimal bones an irregularly rectangular thin plate, part of the medial wall of the orbit behind the frontal process of the maxilla
inferior nasal conchae the lowest bone in nasal septum that looks like a conch shell
hyoid bone NOT attached to another bone; floats below mandible & serves as attachment for some tongue muscles
nasal septum vomer & perpendicular plate of ethmoid bone - plus hyaline cartilage
superficial facial bones kkk
deep facial bones
paranasal sinues (4 kinds) frontal - ethmoidal labyrinth - sphenoidal sinus - maxillary sinus (named for bones in which they are located)
what is "keystone" of cranial floor? Check - is it sphenoid??
what is "keystone" of face? check - is it maxilla?
what is a cleft palate? facial bones don't fuse - palatine processes of the maxillae don't fuse with one another-opening between the nasal and oral cavities [cleft lip is if maxillae don't form properly]
