Circle Vocabulary

Definitions of Terms

TermDefinition
Chord A segment whose endpoints lie on a circle
Diameter A chord that contains the center of the circle
Secant of a Circle A line that contains a chord
Tangent to a Circle A line that lies in a plane of a circle and that intersects the circle at exactly one point (point of tang ency)
Circle The set of all points in a plane at a given distance from a given point in the plane
Radius A segment from a point on a circle or a sphere to the center
Congruent Circles Circles with the same radius
Concentric Circles Circles that lie in the same plane that share the same center
Inscribed Angle Angle whose vertex lies on a circle and whose sides contain chords of the circle
Central Angel Angle whose vertex is the center of a circle and whose radii contain radii of the circle
Circumference Distance around a circle, that is, the perimeter of a circle
Arc Lenght A fraction of the circumference of a circle defined by the arc
Arc of a Circle Two points on a circle and the continuous part of the circle between the two points
Semicircle An arc of a circle whose endpoints are the endpoints of a diameter
Minor Arc An arc of a circle whose length is less than the length of a semicircle of the circle
Major Arc An arc of a circle whose length is greater than the length of a semicircle of the circle
