Climate refers to the long-term, average conditions of temperature, precipitation, winds and clouds in an area
Microclimate a small area with climate conditions that differ from those around it
Tropical zone area near the equator, between about 23.5 degrees N and 23.5 degrees S latitude
Polar zone extend from about 66.5 to 90 degrees in both north and south latitudes
Temperate zone between the tropical zones and polar zones
Marine climates relatively mild winters and cool summers
Continental climates more extreme temperatures that marine climates; winters are cold, summers are warm or hot
Ocean currents streams of water within the oceans that move in regular patterns
Windward the side of the mountains that the wind hits first, rain or snow falls here
Leeward the downwind side of the mountains; little precipitation falls here
Monsoons sea and land breezes over a large area that change direction with the seasons
El Nino occurs when an unusual pattern of winds forms over the western Pacific ocean
La Nina typically brings colder than normal winters and greater precipitation to the Pacific Northwest and causes greater hurricane activity in the western Atlantic
Salinity total amount of dissolved salts in a water sample
Upwelling the movement of cold water upward from the deep ocean
Rain forest forests in which large amounts of rain fall year-round
Savannas tropical grasslands with scattered clumps of trees
Deserts arid regions; get less than 25cm of rain a year
Steppe a prairie or grassland found in the semiarid areas located on the edges of deserts
Chaparral area of dense shrubs and small trees founding Mediterranean climates
Humid subtropical climates that are wet and warm, but not constantly hot
Subarctic lie north of the humid continental climates; summers are short and cool, winters are long and bitterly cold
Tundra polar climate region, found across northern Alaska, Canada and Russia; summers are short and cool, winters are long and bitterly cold
Permafrost permanently frozen soil found in the tundra climate region
Ice ages time in the past when continental glaciers covered large parts of Earth’s surface
Global warming gradual increase in the temperature of Earth’s climate
Greenhouse gases gases in the atmosphere that trap energy
Ozone hole a large area of reduced ozone
Chlorofluorocarbons chlorine compounds that are the main cause of ozone depletion
