SOL 7-8: Byzantine, Russia, and Islam

Justinian SOL 7: Byzantine emperor in the 6th century A.D. who reconquered much of the territory previously ruled by Rome, initiated an ambitious building program , including Hagia Sofia, as well as a new legal code
Justinian's Code SOL 7: An organized collection and explanation of Roman laws for use by the Byzantine Empire
Icons SOL 7: A painting of Christ or another holy figure, used as an aid to devotion in the Byzantine and other Eastern Churches.
Mosaics SOL 7: Patterns or pictures made by embedding small pieces of stone or glass in cement on surfaces such as walls and floors.
Hagia Sophia SOL 7: Most famous example of Byzantine architecture, it was built under Justinian I and is considered one of the most perfect buildings in the world.
Greek Orthodox SOL 7: Eastern branch of Christianity centered in Constantinople; spread to Russia; spoke in Greek
Constantinople SOL 7: A place previously known as Byzantium which became the capitol of the Roman Empire or "new Rome"
Cyrillic Alphabet SOL 7: An alphabet for the writing of Slavic languages, devised in the ninth century A.D. by Saints Cyril to help spread Greek Orthodox religion
St. Cyril SOL 7: Went with to Russia to spread the Orthodox religion; brought the Cyrillic Alphabet to Russia.
Onion domes SOL 7: This was a form an architecture developed by the Byzantines and seen in Russia. The some was smaller at the bottom and top, and largest in the middle. It was very popular for Orthodox Churches.
Arabian Peninsula SOL 8: Crossroads of 3 continents; mainly desert; borders Mediterranean Sea, Red Sea, Persian Gulf, and Indian Ocean; ISLAM was founded here.
Muhammad SOL 8: A prophet who introduced a religion called Islam in Arabia.
Quran SOL 8: Holy book of Islam
Mecca and Medina SOL 8: What are the two holy cities in the Islamic religion?
Allah SOL 8: Arabic word for God
Five Pillars SOL 8: Beliefs of Muslims - Declaration of faith, prayer, alms, fasting, and pilgrimage
