Indus River Valley This first people of India settled along this. The people developed new techniques in metal and hand crafted seal carvings. They also had cities of brick with drainage systems and multi-storied homes.
Great Wall of China was build originally in part to protect the northern borders from invaders.
flood plains a flat or nearly flat land near a stream or river.
desert land that receives an extremely low amount of water per year.
rainforest an area that receives a large amount of rainfall each year. Lots of vegetation grows because of this.
levee a naturally or artificially constructed wall usually built from earth or concrete. These are usually built to keep out floods and to regulate water levels.
hunter-gathers a society in which food is obtained mainly from wild plants and animals. This society usually does not farm, build cities or keep large amounts of food.
nomadic people a community of people that move from place to place. These people are herders and usually search for seasonal plants.
timeline a way to display events in chronological order.
primary documents information or material that is closest to a person; information is usually from someone or something that was actually there.
secondary documents describes information that is about an event or place in the past. Ex. encyclopedia, history books, article, etc.
Native Americans these people may have crossed the land bridge many thousands of years ago. Some of these people moved from living as nomads to living in houses built of adobe.
cataracts In southern Egypt, these wild rapids made it impossible for southern invaders to navigate the rivers to attach the Egyptians.
domesticate the training or taming of plants and animals by humans for daily use.
Agriculture Revolution this was possible because of the technical improvements such as machinery, better drainage and experimentation with crops.
Yellow or Huang He River was located in China and was nicknamed "the river of sorrows" because it was so unpredictable and killed so many people.
ziggurats these huge structures of Mesopotamia (Sumer)were used as temples to their gods.
Code of Hammurabi a collection of laws (law codes) of the Babylonians.
Sumerian city-states these tiny, independent countries had their own ruler and farmlands. The people could use their cities wall to take refuge behind in times of danger.
cuneiform this early writing of Sumer was made by making small wedge shaped marks in wet clay. The clay dried and the tablets were kept for records.
