Poetry Terms

TermDefinition
Alliteration words beginning with the same consonant sound (Example: In summer the sun is strong)
Formula poetry poems that follow a specified formula or pattern (Example: haiku, diamante)
Free verse Poems that can be written as the author chooses; they do not follow a specified rhyme scheme or pattern (Examples: snapshot poem, event poem)
Imagery A mental picture
Metaphor Comparing two things without using like or as
Onomatopoeia Use of words to imitate sounds (Example: The boom of thunder woke me up.)
Poetry Words arranged in such a way as to express ideas and emotions.
Repetition Repeating the same words or phrases in a line or a poem
Rhyme When two or more words have the same sound
Rhythm A regular pattern of accented and unaccented syllables (Example: A little old man from Peru, Was sailing a ship with his crew)
Simile Comparing two things using like or as
Stanza A number of lines that divide a poem into sections
