Poetry Terms
Term | Definition |

Alliteration | words beginning with the same consonant sound (Example: In summer the sun is strong) |
Formula poetry | poems that follow a specified formula or pattern (Example: haiku, diamante) |
Free verse | Poems that can be written as the author chooses; they do not follow a specified rhyme scheme or pattern (Examples: snapshot poem, event poem) |
Imagery | A mental picture |
Metaphor | Comparing two things without using like or as |
Onomatopoeia | Use of words to imitate sounds (Example: The boom of thunder woke me up.) |
Poetry | Words arranged in such a way as to express ideas and emotions. |
Repetition | Repeating the same words or phrases in a line or a poem |
Rhyme | When two or more words have the same sound |
Rhythm | A regular pattern of accented and unaccented syllables (Example: A little old man from Peru, Was sailing a ship with his crew) |
Simile | Comparing two things using like or as |
Stanza | A number of lines that divide a poem into sections |
