Slave State State that allows slavery
Free State State that didn't allow slavery
States' Rights States thought that their ideas were more important than the government's
Missouri Compromise A compromise in 1820 that allowed Missouri to become a slave state and Maine to become a free state
Underground Railroad A route of houses and other places to help slaves escape to the north
Compromise of 1850 Admitted California to the union as a free state, gave part of texas to New Mexico, Banned slavery in D.C., New Mexico and Utah were given the right for the people to vote to either be a slave state or free state
Popular Sovereignty The right of the people to decide on an issue(voting)
Insurrection Armed Rebellion
Treason Violation of the allegiance to one's country or state
Martyr A person that is willing to die for what they believe in
Secede To withdraw from
Confederate States of America The group of 11 states that seceded from the United States
