para means beside as in the words paragraph or parallel or paralyzed
bio means life
geo means earth
auto means self
sub means under or below
trans means across as in the word transcribe or transcontinental (transcontinental railroad went across the continental US)
poly means many as in the word polygon or polygraph (a polygraph is a lie detector and you are asked many true or false questions and answer are graphed)
cartography means the making (writing) of maps
soci means a group of people
mem means remembering
social studies is called social studies because you study various social groups - usually entire countries or cultures
association and society both mean an organization of people with similar interests
anti means against
contra means against
contradict means speak or say against
dis means apart as in dismiss - to send apart from someone
rupt as in the word disrupt means to tear - to tear apart (a student disrupts class) tears the flow of instruction apart)
ist at the end of a word means Person
or/er at the end of a word means person as in teacher, doctor, advisor, reader, writer, etc.
psych means mind as in the word psychology
psychology means the study of the mind
the suffix logy means the science or the study of
the suffix logist means the person who does the studying as in biologist
anim as in the word animal or the genre anime means life or bring to life
paleo as in the word paleontology means fossils
prefix de means down, off of, or undo
delete means undo
descend means go down
derail means off of as in a train going off the tracks or student becoming derailed in their efforts
ject means to throw as in the word dejected (feeling as if someone has thrown you down) downhearted, sad
reject means throw back again - reject the offer or the invitation, etc.
tract means pull as in the word tractor
detract means pull down or off of as in detract your attention - to pull it off of
vert means turn as in vertebrae
revert means turn back again - if you revert to your old ways you turn back again to what you were once doing
subtract is called subtract because you pull a number from underneath another number when you write a subtraction problem.
project means - when you say it with the sound of long o to throw your voice as in performers on a stage might need a microphone to help project their voice to the entire audience
project means - when you say it with a short o sound to throw forward something that you have created for other to look at, work with, see, etc. as in a science project.
words that end in sion or tion are usually what part of speech? nouns
the prefix pro means up or forward
prospect means (2 meanings)! it has two meanings: prospect for gold - look for and look forward to something as in the prospect of summer vacation or a special event on the weekend
envision means your mind's eye - to see with your mind, in your mind - envision a hot fudge sundae or a character etc.
tele means distance as in telephone or telegraph, sounds or writing at a distance
ex means out
the prefix com means together as in committee - people working together, a companion someone you are together with, etc
the word compare 2 put two items together to check for similarities
sym means together as in sympathy - together with feelings as in sympathy card
symphony lots of people playing together to make sounds as in a symphony orchestra
pathos means feelins as in empathy - knowing how someone else feels, or sympathy, or apathetic (no feeling one way or another)
medi means middle as in median of the road or the middle number as in math
Mediterranean Sea is called this by the ancient Greeks because it was the middle earth sea - during this period in history
auditory means as in the auditory canal or auditory nerve - allow you to hear
ible and able at the end of a words means able to be as is audible (able to be heard) breakable (ability or able to be broken)
number prefix bi means two as in bicycyle or bifocal
mono means one as in monopoly or moneran or monacle
micro means tiny as in microscope which allows you to see tiny things
ped means feet or foot as in biped - two footed (humans are bipeds)
pedestrian means person who walks on foot
the number prefix tri means three as in tricycle or triangle, etc
the number quad means four as in quadrangle or quadraplegic (person who has lost the use of all four limbs)
the root lumin means light as in the word illuminate
the root photo means light as in photograph - written with light
the root di means apart as in the word divide - take something apart
digest as in digestion or digest food is called this because when your stomach digests food it is taking it apart - breaking it down.
arthro means joints as in the words arthropod or arthritis
the prefix in can mean into or not depending on the word - incorrect - means not correct, into
the prefix im can mean in or not as in the words import - into a country or improper - not proper
projectile means thrown forward or thrown up as in a missle is a projectile
